LAKE COUNTY

Lake County was formed from a portion of Orange and Sumter counties in 1887. The 1,200-square-mile county, with hundreds of pristine lakes gracing its countryside, was aptly named "Lake" County.   The county was first settled by Capt. Melton Haynes in the 1840s....and since that time, many of those who have come to visit Lake County have decided to stay........and no wonder.....

Rolling terrain (the diverse landscape and terrain range from 0 to 315 feet above sea level) and country charm give the county special appeal to those who seek a walk into Florida's past.   Rolling hills dotted by orange groves in the south and pristine flora of "Old Florida" in the north have captured the hearts and imagination of many. With so many natural features, including more than 500 lakes and rivers, Lake County continues to attract visitors . . . . .just as it attracted Capt. Haynes.  A booming population has led to a surge of new housing construction.

Lake County boasts expansive parks and recreational facilities.  There is the opportunity to  cruise, fish, or water-ski on the many lakes. Within its borders, are several competition water-ski schools and a nationally recognized triathlon training center.  And for the golf enthusiast . . . With dramatic fairway elevation changes and spectacular lake views on championship courses, golfers of all abilities can enjoy a challenge.

Visitors flock to places like the quaint village of Mount Dora to enjoy a day of visiting the antique shoppes and cozy cafes.  The farmer´s markets and flea markets overflow with everything from specialty orchids to imported antique weapons and farm-fresh strawberries. Residents and visitors can find what they are looking for and so much more!

Affordable land, convenient highway access and a pro-business attitude by leaders are paving the way for new development. Much of the growth is in product distribution, with large distributors like Circuit City, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Sprint North Supply and Marriott Distribution Services calling Lake County home.  Another emerging industry is health care, particularly sports medicine, biomedicine and pharmaceuticals. The county's aging population is one reason for that industry's rapid progress.  Another reason is the arrival of the USA Triathlon National Training Center, located in the southern part of this evolving county.
